Understanding who we are in Christ

2011-12-28 18.41.46

I am by no means a perfect Christian or someone who thinks he’s got this salvation thing locked down, but one thing I have noticed is that a lot of Christians do not have a clear concept of who they are in Christ. Now I’m not underestimating the devils capability to take ones fears and use them against them to cause that person to fall or question there faith because its happened to me and I’ve seen it happen to countless friends. For me, one of the key elements of faith is understanding who you are in Christ.

The more I begin to understand who I am in Christ, the more I find myself doing things and saying things that I would have never imagined. Now, I’ve always been the kind of Christian who would rather be a casual witness then one who preaches on the street corner. My mission field of choice is the local espresso bar and to those of you know me that comes as no surprise all. Talking is a natural gift of mine.. my wife says I love the sound of my own voice .. I don’t know .. maybe I do or maybe its just the evangelist in me. Either way my gift of the gab seems to pay off when it comes to chatting to complete strangers about God. My point to all of this is that when you begin to understand who you are in Christ your faith begins to grow and your confidence grows alongside it. God gave his Authority to Jesus and since Jesus is in us we are also given that authority. But for the skeptics here’s a few key verses ..

Matthew 11:27 “My Father has given me authority over everything. No one really knows the Son except the Father, and no one really knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Psalm 8:6 “You put us in charge of everything you made, giving us authority over all things”

Zechariah 10:12 “I will make my people strong in my power, and they will go wherever they wish by my authority. I, the LORD, have spoken!”

Colossians 2:10 “and you are complete through your union with Christ. He is the Lord over every ruler and authority in the universe.”

.. And here’s my favorite ..

Revelation 2:26 “”To all who are victorious, who obey me to the very end, I will give authority over all the nations.

With any position of authority comes great responsibility. The Authority we have as Christians in the name of Jesus is not to be taken lightly. If I try to claim authority over a place or situation that is outside of the will of God things are going to go wrong. 2 Corinthians 10:13 is pretty clear on this .. “But we will not boast of authority we do not have. Our goal is to stay within the boundaries of God’s plan for us, and this plan includes our working there with you.” In other words you can’t go out to the clubs and have a few beers and expect to be covered under the Authority of God. His hand of protection may be on you but unless God has clearly spoken to you then its highly likely God doesn’t want you hanging out in clubs drinking. When we step outside of the will of God we open ourselves up to a wide variety of drama in our lives. As for me I’m all about having as little drama in my life as possible and I think overall a little bit of common sense applies here as well. In other words if you go to a club and get punched in the face don’t go blaming God for it, there’s a good chance he didn’t want you there in the first place.

To unlock the freedom found in understanding who we are in Christ Jesus is what leads us to the understanding of true freedom. Freedom is irrelevant if it is found in temporary situations. The only true freedom is the eternal freedom that can only be found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, Everything else is temporary. The banks, the automotive industry, the oil industry, the economic recession. It is all a pathetic spec of nothingness in comparison to the grace of my God. My whole life God has been teaching me a never ending lesson on trust. And so far what I’ve learned is that the more I trust in Him, the more I put my faith in Him, the more I understand the Authority I have in Christ. Ten years ago I knelt on the floor of my bedroom in total despair and confusion. I got on my knees with the determination that I was not going to get up until I was healed of the pain I was going through. I was healed that night and after I got up I made a deal with God to always put my trust in Him. That next morning a phone call changed my life and since then I’ve been to places I never would’ve imagined, and I am without a doubt a very blessed man, and its all because I trusted in the Authority of the name of Jesus.

So you basically have two options. You can go about doing things your way and trusting in your own ideas, or you can take a risk, let go and let God. Put your trust completely and utterly in Him and everything else .. and I do mean everything else will work out. Maybe not the way you thought it would, but I can tell you from experience that Gods way is the best way.

I know I’m gonna step on a few toes by writing this but I felt it was something that needed to be addressed. I have noticed that people treat facebook like its Las Vegas .. its almost like “what happens on facebook stays on facebook”, but we all know thats not true. Now, I am a self confessed social networking addict and facebook is my main drug of choice. What I’ve noticed is that people tend to unintentionally reveal more about themselves then they realize. I love to browse through my friends photos to see what’s going in there lives .. its like a window into ones life. One thing I have noticed is that every now and then I see photos of someone at a party with a beer in there hand looking a like they have had more then two or three. These are people I know as Christians and while I have many friends in the church with many different views on drinking alcohol I tend to take the stance that getting drunk is a bad thing. So I pose these questions: What do your facebook photos say about you? If Jesus came back today and decided we would all be judged based on our facebook photos would you be nervous?

Misplaced faith and insane expectations, the search for the perfect church.

What are you looking for in your church? If you go to a large church like I do it wont take you long to find someone who isnt happy with the way things are going in the church .. They feel left out and neglected .. They feel like outcasts. They are seeking the love of the people in the church they attend. But are they putting that love and acceptance of the people above there relationship with Jesus? A friend of mine asked me a serious question today .. “how do we keep people satisfied in church, to take their mind off them being fed, and to reach a hand out to those who need help themselves.” .. It was that question that inspired me to write this blog.

The question is not so much how to keep people satisfied in church so much as it is about how to get people to the point in there faith walks where they realize the following .. Salvation is not found in the church or its people. Salvation is ONLY found through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Once people begin to understand that and walk in it then church becomes less of a place of stress and acceptance and more of a place where they can relax and connect with God. Once they are relaxed and focusing on Him they are more likely to be able to walk in the flow of the Holy Spirit and then they will automatically start building the relationships they were previously to distracted from building.

The Bible does not say seek first the church and the acceptance of its people .. it says this .. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – matt 6:33. God allowed me to place my faith in people and in return those people failed me time and time again .. but it wasn’t so much the people at fault .. it was more that I was looking for the perfect friendship when really .. that can only be found in Jesus. Once I realized that I should’ve been relying on Jesus first he then sent me people that I could rely on. Gods got a funny sense of humour like that. Sometimes he has to sit back and wait for us to be obedient before he can move. I’ve always told people how vitally important it is to maintain a solid personal and devoted relationship with Jesus but I wasnt applying it to one of the key areas of my life .. fellowship. If I am in true fellowship with Jesus everything else flows .. if we’re not in true fellowship with Jesus we tend to displace those deep inner desires for fellowship, love and salvation on people and not Jesus and it always leads to heart ache and bitter disappointment. But for some reason ever since I set foot in Australia I had been diverting my need for salvation onto people instead of Jesus.

I even dragged my wife out of the church we were called to be at in the desperate search for what was right in front of me the whole time.. JESUS! Rather then go into the ugly details I’ll skip to the chase and let you know that were back where we’re supposed to be and quite content.

So .. feeling invisable in your church? feeling unwanted or unloved? maybe they are legitimate feelings or maybe your displacing your need for salvation on people who are just trying to keep themselves a float much less be your saviour. Maybe just maybe Salvation is meant to be between you and Jesus and once you realize that you begin to develop and grow in your relationship with Jesus .. and in turn you begin to walk in the natural flow of the Holy Spirit and suddenly you start making friends and church becomes something you look forward to again. More to come! stay tuned.

Samsung Galaxy S3 :: Review

20120504090749_samsung-galaxy-s3-03

This is my very first ever tech review and since I’ve been reading tech blogs for years now I’ll start off this review by making a few things very clear. When it comes to my desktops and laptops I am a mac guy all the way. When it comes tomy smartphones I am an Android guy all the way. When it comes to my desktops and laptops I just want them to work which is why I use Mac. When it comes to my smartphones I like to be able to do a bit of modding to the look and feel of thesoftware. I’m not one of those guys who bothers with rooting or custom  roms. I like to customise within the confines of the what comes out of the box.

My previous two phones were the original galaxy s and the galaxy s2. The original galaxy s was a pretty decent phone. Not the fastest phone I’ve ever had but still areally good first effort for Samsung. It didn’t have the polish that apples OS has but it was still a really cool little phone. Then the galaxy s2 came out and I remember being blown away with how fast that phone was. I was initially a bit worried that the bigger 4.3inch screen would be to big for me but I quickly fell in love with having the extra screen space and never looked back. Only two monthsago did Optus finally release Ice Cream Sandwich for the sgs2 which for me dramatically improved the performance of the phone. Iheard reports of some people having battery life issues but I had no battery life issues whatsoever. One thing is for sure .. Ice CreamSandwich is giant leap forward and despite Samsung using a physical menu button I still think this OS is the most polished I’ve seenfrom Android to date.

So I’ve had my sgs3 for 3 full days now and I have to say this is by far the most polished Android phone on the market. You really dohave to hold one in your hand to really appreciate just how good this unit feels in your hand. I did have several plays with the HTC OneX but I couldn’t get over the fact that the battery was not removable and there was no option for expandable memory. To me that totally defeats the purpose of what an Android device is all about.. customisation.

The first thing that hits you when you first get this phone in your hand is how polished and fast this phone is. This is the first Android device I have ever used that I can honestly say has the same level of polish in its OS as an iphone. Everything is super smooth and so fast.

I have always been a huge fan of the Go Launcher Ex UI and it really does stand out on the sgs3′s larger 4.8 inch screen. Having the ability to make your icons slightly smaller and increase the screens grid to a 5 apps wide configuration. It also lets you change the way the phone transitions from screen to screen. Go Launcher EX is free from the Google Play store but there are many other launchers to choose from so try a few different ones and decide which one is best for you.

The screen on this phone is amazingly crisp and clear despite being a pentile screen. Everything from video’s to gaming looks amazing on this screen. Surprisingly the battery life on this phone has so far been fairly reasonable for me. On my first full day of use the phone still had 68% battery life at 2:30pm and by about 7:00pm I still had 42% left which is pretty impressive considering I took several phone calls and continued to tinker with the phone through out the day. One day it would be nice to have a phone that lasts 2 or 3 days on one charge but when you consider the fact that this phone has a massive 4.8 inch screen and a quad core processor I think its amazing that this phone can get through a whole day on a single charge. I was again apprehensive about going from a 4.3 to a 4.8 inch screen but again I quickly fell in love with having the extra real estate on my screen. Having said that I would never buy something with a screen any bigger than 4.8 inch. This screen size for me is at the limit of what feels comfortable in my hand. Anything bigger and your getting into the galaxy note territory which to me is a ridiculous size screen for a smart phone. I don’t often make market predictions but I seriously doubt the phablet craze is something people will ever gravitate to in mass. For me 4.8 inch is the magic screen size .. its big but not phablet big.

I am one of those guys who uses the camera on my phone a lot. I was initially disappointed  to hear that the new sgs3 would be sticking with its 8 megapixel camera. Its not that I wasn’t happy with the camera on the sgs2 but like everyone else before this phone was announced I got caught up in the hype and speculation of what this phones camera would be like. So all that aside let me tell you that the camera on this phone is without a doubt one of its stand out features. It is so incredibly fast that the first time I took a photo on it I wasn’t sure I had taken a photo. I haven’t had a lot of time to really give this camera good work out but from what I have seen so far I can honestly say this is the best camera I have ever used on a phone full stop. It has a ton of new options and the option I like the most so far is the burst mode. Seriously, you have to see this in action to truly appreciate how fast this camera is.

The lock screen is another new favorite for me on this phone. It is highly customisable with the ability to have 4 shortcuts on the bottom of the lock screen for quick access to the camera or which ever app’s you chose to have there. I did find it odd that the settings for the unlock screen were found in the Security section of the settings menu. To customise the lock screen head to settings/security/lock screen options/.

If I could sum up this phone in one word it would have to be “epic”. Samsung have taken Android to the next level with this phone and Apple have some serious catching up to do.. cue the apple fan boy hate in 3.. 2..
